The League for Women Rights was founded in 1920 and its first president was Avra Theodoropoulou. It is the first solely feminist association in Greece. It aims to achieve typical and de facto gender equality, defense and disclosure of women rights and to eradicate gender stereotypes. It was and still is at the forefront of the race for gender equality and has contributed to the promotion of important issues regarding gendered inequalities such as: equal political rights, equal access to all professions, women education and training, equal labour and social insurance rights, introduction of constitutional amendments to abolish discrimination, introduction of pro-women measures, establishment of quota in local and national elections, combat violence against women, promotion of women scientists in decision-making positions in Research and Technology.
